Hotellivarauksemme tuotti hieman päänvaivaa alkusyksystä matkaa varatessamme. Tiesimme olevamme tapojemme vastaisesti liikkeellä n. 2 miljoonan muun turistin kanssa, joten sänkypaikoista oli pulaa. Tässä kohtaa "pelastavat pakettimatkat oy" auttoivat ja saimme hotellin järjestymään suht kivuttomasti. Tosin premiumhinnalle on turha kysyä suurempaa vastinetta. Se mita Balilla saa 30$, saa highseasonina Langkawilta nätin hymyn reception virkailijalta ja tarran rintaan. No, taalaa tiskiin ja hotellihuone siedettaväksi. Oheinen näkymä pienensi hinnan tuottamaa tuskaa.






Lomapäivät sujuivat varsin rytmikkäästi; aamupala, poolille, suihkuun, syomään, nukkumaan. Raskaan tyon raatamat aivot hymisivat onnesta ja taisi 4 sukellusta päivassä tahtiin tottuneelle lomalaisellekin tehdä ihan hyvää olla vaan. Päivän kohokohtiin kuuluivat Jullen visiitti miesten vessassa liskon kanssa (kuva alla) ja Tiian kiljahdukset kohtaamisista käärmeiden kanssa hotellin rantatiellä.




Iltaisin meitä viihdytti a-pi-na-or-kes-te-ri hotellihuoneen terassilla, joka muuten oli huomattavasti groovimpi kuin hotellin aulabaarin filippiiniläiset pimut, joiden hameiden lyhyys oli suoraan johdannainen puuttuvaan laulutaitoon.





Uuden vuoden otimme vastaan palmujen huojuessa hotellin rantahietikolla n.1000 muun hotellivieraan kanssa filippiiniläisen laatubändin tahdissa -luonnollisesti. Vaikkakin puitteet kuulostavat enemmän kuin korneilta, juhla oli riemukkaan riehakas. Sambasimme ja kilistelimme vuoden 2008 tervetulleeksi toisen suomalaisen Mäkisen perheen kanssa ja totesimme yhteiseen ääneen, että nämä bileet voittaa räntasateessa syttymättomän nallin paukuttelun pakkasessa 6-0. Hyvää uutta vuotta 2008 kaikille vielä näin kertaalleen, olkoon se parempi kuin edellinen!

Kaikki hyvä loppuu aikanaan ja apinatkin menevät nukkumaan kotiinsa puun latvaan. Niin myos meidänkin kotiinpaluu on vääjäämäton. Julle nauttii vielä viimeiset vapaat sukelluslomahetkensä Thaimaan rannoilla, jonka jälkeen paluu kotoarkeen koittaa tammikuun puolivälin jälkeen. Minä tulen kotiin jo hieman aikaisemmin ja olen onnellinen siitä että pian kotona on taas joku joka odottaa.

Guamin aamurutiini oli jo tulomatkalta tuttua, Continental tosin jaksaa hymyilyttää. Ajattelin säästää aikaa ja tsekata laukut sisään samantien, kulkematta hotellin kautta. Pekan logiikalla laukkuja ei tarvitse raahata avaamattomana hotellille ja takas. Eipä ollutkaan helppoa, sain oikein hymyillä ääneen virkailijalle.

Virkailija: Oh, Hmm. Se ei taida kayda, yleensa me ei haluta, etta aamu ja iltalaukut menee sekaisin

Jos olis ollu joku muu paiva, kun jouluaaton aamu 04.40, olisin varmaan jatkanut asian "hoitamista", mutta nyt tapojeni vastaisesti luovutin ja toivotin Hyvaa Joulua.

04.50 kuljetus hotelliin ja unta kymppiin. Herattyani ajattelin soittaa Tiialle, joka myos oli helpommin sanottu kuin tehty ;) Kanny ei tietty toimi, en tieda mitka roaminkisopparit TeliaSoneralla on, en kuitenkaan suosittele maailmanymparikayttoon. Ei toimi juuri missaan. Noh, hetken yritettyani hotlan puhelimella soitan respaan:

Nailla tiedoilla rynnistin K-Marttiin ostoksille. Tarkemmin otin bussin, joka onnistui viettamaan 45minsaa 15 minsan reitilla. Ostelin lahinna Ameriikan reseptittomia laakkeita, niissa kun hinta/voimakkuus kohtaa. Hersheyn minttusuklaa tryffelitkin loysi tiensa koriin. Jes ja puhelinkorttisaaga jatkuu. Tutustuin sukellusreissulla Guamilla asuvaan pariskuntaan ja he kutsuivat minut Joulupaivan brunssille paikaliseen Hiltoniin ja viinilasilliselle kotiinsa. Joulu on ihmeiden aikaa, nappailin Sprintin numeron Tedin kotiluuriin ja syotettyani PIN koodin paasin soittamaan. Kuuden tunnin vasytystaistelun jalkeen Guamin puhelinlinjat on polvillaan. Tiia vastaa puhelimeen.

Paiva sujuu mukavasti, tosin Ted heittaa mut melkein ulos kampiltaan. Otin pienet koeajot PSP:lla ja melkein rikoin pinball enkat. Huono peliliike vieraissa, varsinkin jos host on pelaillut kovasti ko. ennatyksen eteen.

Olen takas lentokentalla kaikkine kamoineni pari tuntia ennen Manilan lentoa ja tsekkaan kamoja sisaan. On Jouluaattoilta ja kello on 17.55. Virkailija hymyilee vienosti ja ajattelen, etta jos toi kaveri ei puttaa raffilta, en pelaa golffia enaa ikina.

Samat äijät järjestelevät reissuja myös muualle Filippiineille/Aasiaan/Mikronesiaan. HMS Repulse ja toinen taistelulaiva (unohdin kirjoittaessa nimen) on suosittu retkikohde ja kuulemma vaivan arvoinen reissu.

Mukavia sukelluspaikkoja löytyy pariksi viikoksi, kaikki semmosissa Tech1 syvyyksissä. Mielenkiintoisin oli ehkä meriluola noin 45m syvyydessä. Skootteroitiin luolan suulle ja laitettiin skootteri ja 2xdeco pullot luolan suulle parkkiin ja eiku luolaan. The dive's we've been doing so far have been in the 45-50m range with max 25min BT. Gases: 21/35 with 50% and 100% deco. Unfortunately I don't have Suunto's ridiculously expensive USB cable to download the profiles. I'll try to see if someone else would have that later on. Point is, it's been very rewarding diving so far. Glad to be here.

I did manage to get quite a bit of reading done. I'm in the middle of Robert Jordan's "Wheel of Time" series, book five to be exact. Again, very well written and once you start ... well you'll have to finish the book.

I've taken so many underwater photos during this trip, that I had serious problems tagging and storing them in time for more pictures. I certainly have learned a lot and my natural light pictures are turning our better than before. Tim Rock borrowed me his 77mm magic filter, so I was able to take my Tokina Zoom underwater, few great shots with that, even though it did not focus very closely. I also borrowed 16mm fisheye from Felipe Barrio. Some of the blue water mangrove shots are taken with his lens. I have to say that my photos do pale in comparison to Tim's, Felipe's and Linda's, but hey I just started, these guys have been at it for a lot longer ;)

Last hassles in Makassar airport, where I was slipped to a later plane, even though I needed to be in Jakarta a bit earlier to catch my flight. Frantic running around and good work from Chi Chi saved the day. I did not have a chance to say goodbye to Charon, Jesus, Felipe, Tim, Miuyki or Alberto as they where going to another flight. Goodbye.
To my surprise my luggage arrived to Manila in the same plane as I did. Off to international terminal and Singapore.

Ode to Singapore Airlines. If I have not said this before, no other airline company I've flown this trip comes even close. Brilliant service, new planes with exellent entertainment systems, good food and well ... er... hostesses are pleasant to the eye. Look familiar? After first three dives on the first day, we take a short tender ride from the boat towards an rock wall raising from the sea. Skull spotting for a while and then we start recognizing bones and skulls in the cracks. Many stories on how they got there, sure was spooky.




On the second day, we where getting out of the water after 3rd dive. Well known photojournalist Tim Rock (authoring diving guides for Lonely Planet, etc. etc.) was getting out of the water. As soon as he got the regulator out of his mouth, the adjectives describing the 'wow' of the site start coming out. In top 5 he says. With his experience, I'm not going to challenge that. What I can say is that the place was just awesome. Too much. Beautiful black coral, abundance of reef fish, wobikong, soft corals and then some.




We dove five days in Triton Bay and as promised, during my last dive here, I left my beard behind. No more. "I buried my beard in Triton Bay" -- There's a title for a blues song. I added a photo gallery for Triton Bay, most underwater pictures I've taken this trip... and that's why I'm here. I would not mind to have a macro lens though. I could capture smaller subjects. I arrived to Singapore late in the evening, just enough time to get a room, call Tiia and get to bed. I chose the hotel based on their wireless broadband service. Funny enough, it didn't work due to technical problems. I did ask if they could call GSD and get someone to look at the problem, but judging from their faces they didn't quite get what I was trying to say. I will be in SNG again on the 24th, let's see if I can hook up with the boys on that layover.

Flight to Jakarta was short. Barely a movie, don't you just hate it when you've started one and then the plane lands before it finishes.

It's starting to feel like my beard must go, why? I can give you two examples from the last few days.

1. I was changing some money in Changi airport before getting to the Jakarta plane. One of the two cashiers, an older lady was looking at me with a her eyes wide open. I know I'm good looking :) but that was a bit much. I looked back and smiled:
cash1: How long have to been growing that beard?
me: About three ....
cash1: Years?
me: Not quite... months. You know it started as as a bit of a bet...
cash1: Haha, it looks funny (still not letting her sight slip my beard)
me: Some tell me that, even without the beard
cash2: Do you want this in 20's?

The second example is from Madang, where I was changing planes to fly to Ambon. In the height of this terrorist war around the world, we all know the security check operator are removing important items, like toothpaste, deororant and other trophy collectibles from poor travellers. I claim I've gone through few checks in the last months, so why would YASC (Yet Another Security Check) wan't to shave? Well it wen't like this: I just got my backpack and camera pouch to the belt for the x-ray, security person behind the machine stops looking at the screen while my stuff go through, he stands up and points firmly at me (At this time I'm sure someone have hidden a weapon in my pack and I'm going to jail or worse.). He starts laughing and yells to his collegues, Osama! Laughing echoes from the all of the security guards . I walk through the metal detector with a loud beep, laughing continues ... I pick my pack, nobody checks me nor my stuff and I smile back thinking it's time for the beard to go.

Kaikki pelaa ja on kohillaan, mutta ikä alkaa näkymään. Sukelluskansi toimii hyvin, pullontäytöt ovat varsin täsmällisiä 220bar joka kerta. Kamojen säilytys ym. toimii. Hytit on kuin pienia hotellihuoneita, kaikissa on suihkut ja vessat. Hyvin nukutti.

Crater
Kraateri oli matkan ensimmäinen 'muck' sukellus. Mitas 'muck' oikein tarkoittaa. En osaa suomentaa, mutta koitan selventää. Tyyppillisesti näkyvyys on huono, pohjassa roinaa/lehtiä/tuhkahiekkaa. Korallit ja niille tyypilliset kasvit/kalat puuttuvat. Sukellusten hienous on, etta ko. ympäristöstä löytyy kokonaan erilaiset kasvit ja eläimistö. Mielenkiintoinen sukellus. Blue ribbon eel bongattu.

Barney's

Dickie's Place. Tarina kertoo, että paikan omistaa mies nimeltä Dickie. Ukko ryhtyi suklaafarmariksi eli kaakaotuottajaksi noin 30 vuotta sitten ja omistaa edelleen osan saarta. Ei paskempaa, omat sukellusmestat aivan talon edessä.

Widu Bay, samannimisen kylän edessä. Loistava bongausmesta, semmonen puolimuck dyykki. Graham osoittelee Sammakkokalan, meidän diveguide löytää Ambonin skorpionikalan (Ambon Scorpionfish, Pteroidicthys amboiensis) ja Graham bongaa taas myrkyllisen (Ocellate Octopus) mustekalan. Bongaajat kertovat kummankin olevan varsin harvinaisia ilmestyksiä. Kirjoistakin löytyy vain muutama rivi. Nyt olis makrolinssi kamerassa poikaa.

Crack-a-fat eli Australiaksi aamuheijari ;) Nämä sukelluspaikkojen nimet saa kyllä hymyilemään. Marraskuun ensimmäinen sukellus, ensimmäisenä vedessa, veden lämpötila 30c. Kello näyttää 06.45 ja pudottaudun riutalle. Ensimmäisenä vastaan tulee kilpikonna, jota ei tosin huvita jäädä ihmettelemään mun sukellusvarusteita. Jatkan matkaa vastavirtaan riutan yli ja pudotan n. 25 metriin. Suihkaus liiviin, liike pysähtyy. Pari riuttahaita kruisailee ohi ja huikkaa huomenet, itse asiassa ne taitaa tykätä musta, kun jäävät pyörimään mun eteen. Siinä aikani ihmeteltyä, jatkan matkaa. Iso parvi (Jackfish) ui ympyrää yläpuolella ja iso Potato Cod kroolaa vasemmalta ohi. Nitikalla mennään, USD200 koko reissun litkuista ei paljo itketä. Täyttöjen variassi näyttää olevan prosentin luokkaa, Stardancerilla litku tulee suoraan välitankeista, pitääpä muistaa kysyä miten homma toimii, luulisin, että näin syrjässä täytyy olla jonkunnäköinen erottelujärjestelmä, O2 pullologistiikka täytyy olla ylivoimaista. Minimum decon rajoissa tarvii sukeltaa, tosin muuten voi ihmetellä riuttoja sen kun jaksaa. Ihan mukava, että sukellusten mittaa ei ole mitenkään määritelty. Semmosia 65 minsan vetoja 12 metrin keskisyyvydellä näin kärkeen. Profiilit syvältä matalalle. Aika hyvin tulee kaasut imettyä. Eipä mittään, kerätään rutiinia, treenaillaan. Veneellä on hyvä analysaattori ja kaikki analysoinnit kirjataan vihkoseen ja vedetään nimmarit perään, toimii.

Sukellus uloimmilla riutoilla saa hymyilemään, vanha kunnon riutta ei pettänyt vaikka hieman aluksi epäilytti. Ajattelin, että täällä on sukellettu niin pitkään, riuttojen täytyy olla jo kuluneita. Mutta ei, hyviä mestoja loytyi. Niinkuin taitaa joka riuttajutussa lukea, täytyy kuitenkin lähteä niille uloimmille riutoille asti, eli käytännossä ainakin 4 yön liveaboard. Pienempi rimpuilu voi jättää mustan pekan käteen, päivämatkariutoille ei mielellään. Taka dive on hyvin hoidettu operaatio, eli jos riutalle pitää päästä ... Taka on kokonaisedullinen vaihtoehto. Osprey riutta jäi harmittavasti käymättä tuulen vuoksi, eli haiden syöttäminen jäi tekemättä. Jää jotain seuraavalle kerralle!

Cairns on paikallinen 'keskus', eli semmonen 100k henkeä, kohtuullisen vilkaantuntuinen iltaelämä ja kohtuulliset shoppailumahdollisuudet. Meitsin SMB on edelleen hajalla, enkä ole saanut uutta tilalle. Yllättävää, että paikalliset sukelluskaupat on niin huonosti varustettuja, periaattessa tilauspisteitä, juuri mitään ei loydy hyllystä.

Port Douglas on varsin rauhallinen ja myös hieman kalliimpi pikku kylä Kaikki tarvittava loytyy, muukaanlukien neljän mailin rantatontti. Napsin muutamia kuvia, kun kävelin sen päästä päähän. Päällimmäiseksi jäi mieleen, että Cairns on semmonen menomesta ja Port Douglas taas enemmän semmoseen perhemenoon.

Cairnssin seutu on täynnä kaikenlaista järjestettyä ohjelmaa. On jokimelontaa, sukellusta, benjihyppyä, krokotiilifarmi, sademetsäeläinpuisto, pari tavallista eläinpuistoa, purjehdusta jne. eli tekemistä riitää. Itse kävin tuossa sademetsäjuhanissa. Homma alkoi buffa-aamupalalla ja sitten ohjelmat päälle, semmonen kolme tuntia meni helposti. Retken saalis on valokuva-albumissa. Hankaluutena oli lintujen bongaus, koska ne lenteli vapaasti ympäriinsä, eli plakaatin kohdalle ei toudellakaan ollut ilmoitettuja lintuja. Anyway, kannatti käydä

Paras tapa ehdä nähdä itärannikkoa on ajella rantaa pitkin. Lasse & Laura tais semmosen reissun vetästä muutama vuosi sitten. Kumpikaan näistä mestoista ei oikein kiinnostanut muutamaa päivää pidempään. Nappailin kuvia parin viimepäivän aikana ja lisäsin ne valokuva-albumiin. Potato Cod was and cod feeding was pretty cool. There was three pretty big cod's coming for lunch and yes, we all got our pictures as it seemed it was the papparazzi's day off. Everyone had their camera's shooting mad. No worries I got few of my own.

Steve's Bommie. What is a bommie? Was my 1st question, apparently it has roots in aborginal (Turkulainen, in Finnish) language, meaning a formation of some sort. Bigger than pinnacle, basically a wide tower coming for the seafloor. All the pinnacles and Bommies we saw where abundant with life! Good places to burn few megs of memory card.

Red Bass and light of god. During the nightdive in Challenger Bay my cavelight was used for hunting by Red Bass. If I lighted up a poor little fishie swimming around, it took about 5 seconds for a big ass bass to come behind and above my head to eat the sucker. I usually vouch for the weaker one, so I gave some back by lighting a fish near hard corals and removing the light just before the bass was able to do the catch. I makes quite a big noise when bass is swimming full speed to a coral because it can't see anymore. Don't be so keen on the light was the lesson. Quite impressive though, because they clearly had leaned to hunt with the diving light. I was able to draw a school the fish that just followed my light.

Last night dive at Beer Garden I think we missed the 'turtle bay' and did not find it. We where luckly as on our way back we saw a big turtle hiding under a rock. I guess he liked my light as he tagged on for about ten minutes and followed us back towards the boat. At one point he was just about a meter above my head, I didn't see him go there at all. After a while I think it got bored and left.

Taka boat is build to a tunafishing boat specs which makes it very seaworthy. The diving deck works really well and they have a ramp which can be lowered down to collect divers back from the dive. Very easy to get onto. Showers and other facilities are adequate and you did not have to wait for very long to get a quick warm shower after the dive. There was few extra costs AUD75 for fuel and Reef tax, AUD105 for 32% for all my dives (13 in all). Not too bad. Dives in general where limited by the 'boat rules' to 50 minutes and night dives to 40. Our average depths where quite shallow around +=10m, so we could have done a bit longer ones, but hey.

My dive buddy was a lovely Japanese lady, Naoko or Nao for short. We had a good time diving and checking out the sites. She is a good diver and we where always the first ones to splash (unless I was sitting the loo, reading a book). Her SAC was less than mine, we basically set our planning to my consumption. I think it was because she was about 1/2 of my size and I'm not a man-mountain myself. Too bad she did not make it to our farewell dinner on Tuesday night. So Nao, when you read this, I hope you think you should have, haha. Anyway, thanks for the diving! I will visit Japan one of these days. George, beware!

Enough about building, Dive Tutukaka took me to Poor Knights for a day of diving. They have seven (if I remember correctly) purpose build dive boats, which pretty much makes them the biggest operator I've been diving with. Ever. We are not quite yet in the season, only one boat left for the Islands. Quite fully, I've been hauling my dive gear around the world and I did not have them with me. I thought I'll just have a bit of a tour and look around Northland, but I guess I just could not give it a miss once I was there. I ended up renting all of the gear NZ$206 for the day including a sandwitch lunch.

The kelp forest we did our first dive in was just wonderful. I haven't seen kelps before and it was quite nice diving in and around them. I also enjoyed Manta's and different (subtropical I guess) life underwater. I was pretty frozen after the dives, it was after all only +16c. Our boat tender was fast enough to put a hot cup of chicken soup in my hand, so it wasn't so bad after all. Local's where very fast in always repeating the Poor Knights is in Cousteaus top 10. I was a special place to dive, no question. It remains to be seen is the place will be in my top ten when I come back.

I continued my drive towards Bay of Islands, my idea was to to sailing for a day but my own mistake prevented me going. I had to go back as my flight was leaving a day before I thought it would. Duh. I still manager to drive around to the other side of the island and check the Kauri forest and the biggest Kauri (or any other for that matter). Maori's call it Tane Mahate (again my spelling might be a bit off, I'm not able to double check right now).

I drove to a small village for lunch. I did get my food and I also tool a haircut in a local barber shop. I wanted to look like Robbie Williams (again), but she cut my hair in a redneck-kiwi-robbie style. I'm not worried, I still got rkr-style! Rest of the trip was uneventful and I got back to Waiheke to pack and such. I did leave a packet for Tuure to mail to Switzerland. That's number 2. I'm not sure if Late already has sent the first one. I better check with him.

In the evening I went to a Japanese restaurant with Minna to meet few of her (and Tuure's) friends. I confess that I have now forgotten their names as I writing this a week later. Very nice people though, I had a fun evening and ate lots of sashimi, Asahi guzzler in me got a front seat and I had to down few of them.

Farewell Auckland, Tuure and Minna took such a good care of me, I might have to come back. We rented a car the next day I arrived to NZ and headed for Rorotua, south from Auckland. Rorotua sits just between continental plates and a lot of traces from volcanic activity can been seen. We visited two thermal areas around Rorotua Wai-O-Tapu andOrakei Korako. The pictures I took does not capture the uniqueness of the places.

Mudbath in Hells Gate spa was certainly a experience. I wasn't quite THAT hot, but the dip time was limited to 20min only. There was also another warm chill-out pool where you could reflect that fact that you've just been in a mud bath. Unfortunately I still don't look like Brad, perhaps I need another go at it. Interestingly, one of our Maori hosts was telling us that he has many Finnish friends... apparenly Finnish owned papermill have been operating in the area, which in turn brought few Finns to the area. I didn't meet any Finnish Maori's, but there are some ;)

We also visited a Maori village called Whakarewarewa just outside of Rorotua. Interesting village, build on top of volcanic core. The land was quite warm at places and all cooking was done in boiling water / holes filled with hot steam. We also saw geysirs around the area. Apparently the area was chosen by the forefathers to keep them warm during the winter months. We had a traditional Hangi meal with kumara, potato, gabbage, chicken, pork and carrots before leaving towards the coast. Very pleasant visit.

I Hahei we witnessed the catastrophy of the century. All black (NZ national rugby team) lost in quarterfinals to France. On the way back to Aucland, we saw half-masted flags, even a small shrine next to the road with All Blacks flag half buried. With shrine I mean one of those little crosses and such on Alp passes where people have had accidents and died. That's pretty much what everyone's been talking about over here.

Last week we also visited Karekare and Piha beaches in Waitakere area. No surfers yet, but during the season a bit of a Mekka for the surf-heads. The movie 'Piano' was filmed in Karekare beach. It had an odd eerie feeling to it, perhaps it was the weather. Sand was black-ish in colour.

Tuli kohtuullisen tutuksi, kun joutu odottelemaan lentoa Kadavun saarelle. Saari on noin 45min lentomatkan päässä ja hyvin luonnonmukaisessa tilassa. Suuret turistiresortit ovat keskittyneet muille saarille.

Great Astrolabe riutta avautui Matavan edessä ja sukelluspaikkoja riitti koko viikoksi. Valitettavasti tuulinen ja pilvinen sää esti sukellukset riutan ulkopuolella ja suuremmat kalat jäi näkemättä. Oppaan muukaan näkyvyys on ulkopuolella parampi. Noh, Manta sentään bongattiin.

Viikko kului nopeasti. Kaksi sukellusta aamulla, lounas, ihmettelyä, päivällinen ja nukkumaan. Taisin herätä joka aamu noin kello viisi, aurinko nousi. Sunnuntaita vasten yöllä pelattiin Fiji-Wales world cup karsintaottelu. Fiji lähetti Walesin laulukuoroon, onneksi. Rugby on Fijin kansallispeli ja fanitus on kauhiaa. Matavassa ei ollut sähköä, kävelimme noin 20min viidakossa kylän kauppa-asemalle, jossa oli lähin tv. Ihmisvuoren kokoisen Fijiläisköntit kansoittivat istumapaikat ja meininki oli kova. Kylän päällikkö on kieltänyt alkoholin nauttimisen, eli paikallisten mekastus oli selvästä päästä. Illasta selvittiin ilman vammoja ja viidakko raikui laulusta kotimatkalla. Voitto kotiin, seuraavalla kierroksella vastaan asettuu Etelä-Afrikka. Taitaa tulla turpaan.

Ilmat eivät oikeen suosineet tällä kertaa. Fiji jäi hieman ehkä pikaiseksi visiitiksi. Sanoisin, että vähintää se kaksi viikkoa tarvis olla. Ehkä käydä parillakin saarella, koska ne ovat varsin erilaisia. Sukellus hyvää, en uskalla kehua enempää. Ehkä Astrolaben ulkopuolella tai muilla saarilla parempaa. So, no electricity. Well few things can be charged during the day in office. Almost like dropping off the grid. The place certainly is in the middle of nowhere. I like this. Other guests are pretty much from all over, German couple from Sydney, honeymooners from Hawaii, odd Finn-boy, couple from England and California etc. Pretty relaxed folks.

My trip here was a bit of a challenge, took me just over 48 hours. I left Playa on Monday morning with bus to Cancun... After security check and rechecks of my diving gear and great bordell I got to the plane with all my stuff. Off to Phoenix and the land of the free. New security checks and rechecking and more bordell, yep got pulled over again. Off to LA. This time my bag will be routed all the way to Nadi, phew. Not quite, in LA I had to go outside of the Terminal and do a bit of security checking and bag searches again. I'm getting good at this, just my face has a weird itch, not sure why. I get away after showing my toothpaste and getting rid of it. 10ml too much of whitening toothpaste. My paste never was Nadi. What a shame.

I arrived to Nadi International early on Wednesday morning (we flew over the dateline). Nice 7 hour wait before our plane to Kadavu. Plane was on Island time and left a bit over an hour late. No problem, I'm on vacation. Well, the weather did not really agree with us, so we never found the Airport. We did four round pretty low over the Pacific and saw just that, Pacific. Off we go, back to Nadi and to find a Hotel for the night. I was pretty pissed off by now. No worries, On vacation still.

Come Thursday and 7am, back in the Airport waiting for 8am flight. Operations where looking for a plane for us etc. Island time, remember. Off we go around mid-day after 5 hour wait. Finally in Kadavu and after a wet boat ride in the rain. I managed to squeeze quite a bit in my two weeks here. I visited Cozumel, did some diving there, few cavern dives, a beach day and the cave course. Not too bad for two week visit. I've had enough of everything else. More diving in Cenotes I could do ;)

The high point really was the Cave 1 course. That was the main reason for me to come to Mexico during my trip in the first place. To be honest, I was not sure what to expect. I was prepared to be in the Army again, I thought old ranks/stripes don't count in this environment. Doing push-ups in the morning and running around flagpoles, if the answers did not satisfy the Instructor. Eating cold lunch under a tree, haha. Well, it wasn't like that.

Five days of non-stop diving and academics. We usually started around 7.30 and finished around 19.30. Full days. Time goes fast when you are learning and in general doing what you like/want. I didn't feel tired or bored at any stage. I made sure I sleep and eat enough between 20.00 and 6.00. Only thing really missing was caveman food (=meat).

I think our Instructors pedagogic (not sure about the spelling) skills where excellent and I easily recommend Zero Gravity / GUE cave diving course to anyone. Reason I mention this is that many times I find Instructors (not just for diving) lack in this area making learning difficult for the student. Even my thick head learned a host of new skills and picked up vital information to be a safe diver in cave environment. These guys know what they are doing, plus they actively dive very advanced cave dives themselves. So the old saying "Those who can't, teach" is not true over here, haha.

I have now have a extra day to do laundry, pack and maintain my diving gear. I'd rather be in a cave, but I guess this feeling leaves something to look forward to for the next visit. Heleen and co. at wethorse will have some video material of the caves we've been diving. I hope she can post them up in the next few weeks. I might even ask if I can link them to my video section.

Sain GUE:n (Global Underwater Explorers) Cave 1 statuksen. Kurssi oli sukelluspainotteinen ja toudella vaativa. Pääosa harjoitteista painottui 'selviämiseen' eli erilaisia vika ja hätätilanteita treenailtiin ja kerrattiin useampaan kertaan. Tarkoitus oli takoa homma takaraivoon, niin että kovempikin pää muistaa ;) Tutkintoa vois verrata vaikka 18v saatuun ajokorttiin, perusteet on nyt hallussa, mutta kokemusta ja näkemystä puuttuu. Pitää kulkea varovasti!

En ole juuri päivityksiä viime viikolla kirjoitellut, kurssi vei kaiken ajan. Hyvä kun murkinoida ja nukkua kerkesi. Olin vedessä semmoset 22h eli melkein 5 tuntia päivässä plus sitten teoriat ynnä sen semmoset. Mun puolesta olis voinut vielä vaikka treenata lisää ja jatkaa kurssia parilla päivällä. Kivaa oli, tuntuu että olen parempi sukeltaja.

Lisäsin erillisen kuva-albumin (Cave 1), kattokaahan vähän tunnelmia. Valitettavasti meillä oli kamera mukava pinnan alla vain viimeisenä päivänä, kuvat eivät onnistuneet 100%, koska muutama asetus oli epähuomiossa vaihtunut. Toivottavasti kuvista kuitenkin saa vähän osviittaa miltä luolassa näytti. 300m suuaukosta olevassa 'huoneessa' näkymät olivat mahtavat, kamera ei ikinä seurannut sinne asti. Seuraavalla kerralla sitten! Otin muutaman 'kurssikuvan' pinnan yläpuoleltakin. Kaikki vedenalaiset kuvat otti meidät Instructor, Fred Devos mun kameralla.

Kurssilla mulla oli kavereina kaksi Hollantilaista naista. Toinen heistä, Helen ylläpitää webbisaittia (www.wethorse.nl). Mukavia filminpätkiä ja sukelluskuvia. Täytyy sanoa, että aluksi vähän hirvitti. Kaikki kuitenkin sujui varsin mallikkaasti ja ja meidän tiimi toimi varsin hyvin läpi koko kurssin.

Matkan eka kirja tuli luettua loppuun. William Queenin Under and Alone. "The true story of the undercover agent who infiltrated Americas most violent outlaw motorcycle gang". Mielenkiintoista luettavaa Mongolseista ja muista pärinäpojista, Nämä kaverit tosin ei taida käydä edes ammattirikollisista, sen verran väkivaltaista on meno, ilman sen kummempaa tulosta. Tositarina ja mielenkiintoinen aihe, muuten kirjana tusinatavaraa. Ei haittaa vaikka jää lentokentälle. Suositellaan nyt vielä iltalukemiseksi kaikille mopoilusta innostuneille.

Eilen oli eka "virallinen" biitsipäivä, Jullea grillattiin sopivasti joka puolelta. Mukava tuulenvire piti terävimmän kuumuuden loitolla... Tietty keskellä selkää on hirvee punanen läiskä, juuri SE kohta, johon ei tavallinen jäykkäpekka saa kauhottua lotionia. Tiia joogaa, pitäis vissiin munkin, ois toi selkä vähemmän punanen :) Tuli selkeesti testattua Carmenin hiekat, ei valittamista. Karibian vesi on lämmintä ja hiekka valkoista. Pääosa turisteista on omissa täyshoitosysteemeissään.

Unohdin kertoa tarinan lennolta Charlotesta Cancuniin. Vessajonossa, siinä käytävällä oli semmonen finninen poika, oisko ollu just 19v. Sillä oli punanen paita, seljäs luki notta "08.09.2007 Just Married" ja sydän. Tyylitaju!

Lauantai iltana oli suureelliset itsenäisyyspäivän juhlallisuudet Playan kaupungintalon edustalla. Oli armeijan soittokuntaa, miehekkään kuuloisia puheita, Viva Mexico! Viva!! tuntui olevan illan teema, näin espanjanrajoitteisellekkin kävi selväksi. Otin muutaman foton, tosin ne kaikki ei oikein onnistuneet... treenataan juu. Lisäsin kuvat Playa kohdalle.

Paras herkku tähän saakka on selkeesti ne Tostadat. Meitsi fanittaa ihan kympillä, saakohan niitä Puerto Aventurasta? Muut hyvät: Salbutas ja Panuchas. Kaikki lapataan käsin suuhun.

Two restaurants worth a visit, actually the other one is a bit of a chain. Fogon, I've seen two so far in here. Simple, plenty and frequented by the locals. The other restaurant is called Dona Maria offering local food ie. not Mexican as they said themselves. Tostadas, Por Favor. Like nachos on steroids, crunchy and with delicious chicken, beef or bean toppings. With these two you'll go far. In 5th Ave you get half of the quality and double the price. I think people have gotten used to visitors from US and the steady flow of $$ regardless what they do -- there's always the next one mentality. I guess it really comes down to things like, if you don't buy services from diveshop A when pushed , they will not tell you the directions to shop B (your preference), even when it's 200m away.

To the diving. Yesterday I did two dives with my guide of the day -- Alex. We took a peek into two Cenotes side by side. Kukulan and Chacmool. This was my first dive ever in Cenote and I must say, most of what other people say ;) is true. Truly amazing visibility, almost like there's no water at all. I hoping I get my UW kit setup for next week, so I can share few pictures. Water temp is about 24C, so a drysuit or 5mm+ wetsuit is needed for longer exposures. I did the dives with 3mm + 3mm shorty on top. I'm still working on finding a warm enough suit for the course next week. Anyway, the dives where only single tank and very intro-like. I did however get a good feel on how it's going to be like next week.

Today Consumel. Pretty weird day I must say. I took the ferry from Playa to Conzumel in the morning with all my diving gear. I was to hook up with a group of guys to dive off a boat. All good, I found the place, no problems. First odd thing: I had to ride with one of the guests as apparently there is a bit of a Taxi mafia, they don't allow divers to be driven around by diveshops as they think I'm being separately charged for the trip. Imagine that. Power to the taxi driver union. Is Rich reading this? UNION!! POWER!! Well all good, driving towards the boat. The driver asks "Do you mind if I smoke", I say, just go right ahead. The geezer (50yrs or close) picks up a BIG fat doobie and lights up. At this point we are rolling down the highway around 100km/h. "I don't do regular cigarettes" -- well that turns out to be a lie, he does. No worries I can see the boat. My dive guide for the day Hector is still missing with my gear. At least I'm out of the car.

We do "Colombia" and "San Francisco" for 40 and 58 minutes. The driver guy was diving with us as well. Like the song, I though the was going to dive "but then I got high". Oh well, he wasn't diving with me. My segment air consumption estimations are getting better, I was on the money for most of the time.

I shot few quick photos of the surroundings this morning. I got here yesterday afternoon (10th) and went to sleep pretty much right away. Not sure why I was so tired, well I'm on vacation, so why not.

For the next three days I will be diving in Consumel and not yet names Cenotes, I'm sure I'll find the names out later. Basically a Cenotes are freshwater pools connecting to submerged limestone caverns. "The word cenote is a Spanish corruption of the Maya term D'zonot -- representing a subterranean cavity containing permanent water. The Maya civilization considers the cenotes sacred place, the home of gods and spirits'. Let's find out what's that all about in the next few days.

En sitten juuri Manhattanilta poistunut -- eipä olla moksiskaan, riittihän sitä näkemistä siinäkin. Parina päivänä haahuilin downtown-midtown sektorilla ihan vaan ihmettelemässä. Empiirisen tutkimuksen jälkeen, Taco Bell on Alivaltiosihteerin virallisesti ja aikusten oikeesti OUT. Chipotle on SE uusi ketju, joka korjas homman kotiin. Eli "You gotta love those Chipotle soft tacos" Tiedoksi Laten luona vierailua suunnitteleville, lähin Chipotle on alakerrassa. Ajattelin vierailla UBS:n Stamfordin toimistolla, mutta en sitten lomafiiliksissä saanut aikaiseksi.

Perjantaina vierailin Karin ja Monan luona Bronxvillessä illallisella, n. 25min junamatka Grand Centralilta. Jo Manhattanin vilinään tottuneena, tuntui aika uskomattomalta päästä niin rauhalliseen paikkaan vain 25min matkustamisella. Karilla oli miehekäs Weberin kaasugrilli, oikeen ameeriikan mallia, kun mahtu perheen ja vieraiden grillattavat kaikki samaan aikaan paistumaan. Monan valmistama tomaattisalaatti jäi mieleen, kun aikaisemmin en kyseisiä tomaattilajeja ole nähnyt. Kaikki herkut huuhdeltiin alas riittävällä määrällä punaviiniä, pakkas oikeen naurattamaan. Lupasin seuraavalla kerralla ottaa Tiia mukaan.

Takaisin Manhattanille ja Laten ohjastamalle snapsikierrokselle. Tehokas kolmetuntinen, kierrosrajotin napsahti jossain vaiheessa päälle eli suunta iltapitsalle. Ei meinannu kolmas avenue riittää ku Mäkisen äireen poika käveli pitsalta kotia. Aamutuimaan ei Lauantaina sitten äkkinäisiä liikkeitä tehtykään.

Meat Packing District. Lauri oli varannut meille tuolit mukasta asian fusion ravintolasta nimeltä Spice Market. Julle suosittelee ravintolan seutua muutenkin. Näytti olevan jos jonkinlaista trahteeria juama ja syämäpuolelle. Tukko dollareita sujuvoittaa illanviettoa. Tosin Spice Market ei ollu kallis, eli vielä lisäpisteitä.

Sunnuntain Staten Island Ferry vapaudenpatsaan ohi mainio perusreitti. Lautta on muuten ilmainen. Staten Island on vähän ku Hellanmaa Lapualta kattottuna tai Nummijärvi Helsingistä ... selkeesti talousalueella, mutta vähän syrjässä. Ei varmaankaan hullumpi paikka asua, jos sattuu olemaan duunissa Manhattanin eteläpäässä. Rasittavan reissun jälkeen :) sai kattella Sunnuntain jalispelit (Greeb Bay voitti!).

Maantaina lento lähti 08.45 La Guardian kentältä, mun kamat siveltiin jollain pommisuihkeella tarkastuksessa. Parta alkaa ilmeisesti olemaan tarkastusmitoissa.

Well, I guess I did not come to New York to only eat tacos, though it's a nice bonus. For the past day, I've been trying to orientate myself in Manhattan and do a bit of a plan on what I really want to see. I already think I need to come back, NY is fun!

Today I'm planning of visiting the United Nations building and having a better look at the financial district. I posted few pictures from yesterday, a bit rushed as I was doing the tour. I hope the weather improves, so I can take few wide-angle shots today. My mates rooftop has fabulous view to midtown, right next to the Chrysler building.

It's very difficult to find breakfast from 3rd Avenue, Starbucks to the rescue! Muesli and yogurt

I'm still having problems with the overall weight. Not so much my own, but rather my gear. Not sure how I haul everything to Mexico. Tuntuu, että lahtöä on tehty riittävan pitkään. Juotin kolleegat, pomot ja muut työtutut perisuomalaiseen liikutukseen jo yli viikko sitten. Säätölä ja Nicole potki persauksiin viikko sitten, Mikun kanssa otettiin muutama tiistaina, viime neuvot seuraajalle torstaina, Antti ja Niina tarjoili "vähän makkaraa" perjantaina, kutsuin muutaman ystävän istumaan iltaa lauantaina. Joko pääsee lähtemään??

Mitäs otetaan mukaan? Lufthansan setä kertoo, että matkalle voi ottaa 2 x 32 kg ja repun, ostin kuulemma liput oikeaan aikaan, kun säännöt on sittemmin muuttuneet. Homma pitäis olla paketissa ja tietokoneet päivitetty lisätiedoilla. Vältetään sekaannuksia. "Tietokoneet" (jotain kokemusta) eivat sitten aamulla tiennet vanhoista painorajoista mitään, kun lisätiedot puutuivat, se niistä. Pienen selittelyn ja soittelun jälkeen tasan 32kg ruumaan ja 18kg repussa kabiiniin. Joskus ei mee jakeluun. Nykissä paino vielä lisääntyy, eka paketti kotiin taitaa lähtee muutamassa päivässä.

Takaisin aiheeseen. Rokotuksia sai ottaa huolella, kolme erillistä käyntiä, viimeinen (keltakuume) rokote tuli kuukausi sitten. Pari erillistä EA laukkua, toinen akuuttihoitoon ja toinen jallaa, korvatulehduksia ja malariaa varten. Jallaa ei kuitenkaan mielellään. Sukelluskamat -- en listaile, pelkat regut painaa 5.5 kg, tietääpähän mitä raahaa maailman ympäri. VA kotelo kameralle (Hugyfot D80), hemmetinmoinen kasa latureita ja johtoja. Kamera ja linssit.

Itse lento oli non-event, vieressä tylsä täti, joka ei juuri sanaa saanut suustaan. Pienoinen ongelma, leffat oli paskoja.

Ensimmäinen etappi saavutettu, kirjoitan päivitystä Laten pelimies-condon sohvalla. Late lähti töihin 05.30.
